Journal 1

Beowulf is the archetype of the dragon slayer, the hero who faces death in order to save a threatened community.  Beowulf reminds me of police officers because they are real-life heroes that do whatever they can to keep a community safe.  Police officers risk their lives to chase robbers, disarm gunmen, etc.  Fire fighters are also real-life heroes that are similar to Beowulf because they face death in order to save people from burning buildings.  When terrorists attacked the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, both fire fighters and police officers risked their lives in order to help people get out of the collapsing and burning buildings.  Beowulf also reminds me of people who serve in the Armed Forces because they are willing to lose their lives to protect their country.  Men and women who serve in the Armed Forces have to be strong, quick, cunning, and courageous in order to successfully fight their enemies.  They must work together and defend each other at all times.  Like Beowulf, police officers, fire fighters, and people in the Armed Forces are courageous and loyal to their community/country.
